Traveling can be so amazing and exciting! Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a little unnerving and scary. I have run into a couple of times while out and about (both at home and abroad) where my "spidey senses" were going off in a sketchy situation. Thankfully, nothing too traumatic has ever happened.

That being said, when I went to live abroad for a brief time in South America, I knew I would be walking by myself at times and wanted to look into safety items I could carry. Traveling with pepper spray, tasers, sharp tools or other common deterrents can be difficult or impossible to carry on airplanes. I stumbled across this handy little item from a woman owned small business, Birdie, and it looked like an excellent option.

It is a small (but LOUD) alarm...130dB to be exact! There is also a strobe light that flashes. It easily attaches to your bag/purse and you simply pull the bottom portion down to active the light and siren. It may not do any physical harm, but it will definitely startle the other person and will attract attention from bystanders. I carried it every day when I lived abroad. Thankfully I never had to use it, but it did offer some peace of mind while out and about.
